Apple icon for artificial intelligence in the future due to canceled home office

Apple requires its employees to return to the office – at least 3 days a week. Several employees have already criticized this and are said to have been laid off, but so far there have been no prominent dissenting voices.

That has now changed drastically. Ian Goodfellow found the regulation so bad that he quit Apple, The Verge reports. Goodfellow is not a regular employee, but he is Apple’s director of machine learning.

Goodfellow joined Apple from Google in 2019 and led the development of artificial intelligence at Apple. He allegedly wrote to teammates to justify his move: “I firmly believe that more flexibility would have been the best policy for my team.”

Apple employees have been back in the office since April 11, 2022 after working mostly from home for nearly two years. First of all, the staff must be on site for one day, since the 4th of May, which is two days. As of May 23, employees must remain in the office for 3 days. The rest of the week can be spent in the home office. This is called hybrid working and in many companies it is not yet clear how well this will work.
