Dominique Patourel, the French voice of JR in “Dallas”, dies

Paris (AFP) – The French actor, the voice of JR Ewing on the hit series “Dallas” from the 1980s, has died at the age of 90, his family announced Tuesday.

“My uncle died on Monday evening in Saint-Brieuc Hospital (Cote d’Armor). He had been suffering from diabetes for some time and had to be amputated. His general condition has recently deteriorated,” he told AFP. Nephew of Loic Batorrell.

The funeral will take place on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Burdick (Cotes d’Armor), “the family’s cradle, where he will be buried,” continued his nephew.

“He was one of the last to play under Jean Villard (famous director, founder of the Avignon Festival). He had nearly 80 plays to his credit and about thirty films. He was part of that generation that knew how to do everything”, adds Loïc Paturel .

But his uncle is best known to the general public for his dubbing JR, an unscrupulous character, who has become a cult, from the American series “Dallas”.

“I had a great opportunity. Perhaps, thanks to the dubbing, I had this choice to be able to accept or reject theater or television projects that did not suit me,” he once told the Target Cinema website.

Dominique Patorrell (not related to singer and actress Sabine Patorrell) calls it The One Hundred.

The French voice was for Michael Caine, Terence Hill, Robert Duvall, Frank Sinatra or Vittorio Gassman.

It can also be heard in the French versions of such films as “The Laureate”, “Patton”, “Barry Lyndon”, “The President’s Men”, “Elephant Man”, “Mad Max 2”, “Millenium” and many famous American series (” Colombo”, “The Invaders”, “All Risks Agency”, “Desperate Housewives”…)

Previously, in the 60s and 70s, he was a familiar face on the small screen thanks to such series as “Le chevalier de Maison-Rouge” or “d’Artagnan”.
