Katowice will be the host city for the Men’s Handball World Cup, which will be held in 2023 in Poland and Sweden.

Poland will host 61 of the 112 World Cup matches. We will witness the ceremony and the opening match as well as all Polish performances in the preliminary round in Katowice. Here, too, the draw for the final tournament will take place on July 2.

Spodek gym and entertainment will host up to 21 matches of the tournament

Katowice and the Polish Handball Federation signed an agreement under which Katowice became one of the co-hosts of the tournament.

Katowice, as co-host of the event, ensures the highest international level of organization. Therefore, it is not surprising that handball appears in the best possible form in our city. We are very happy that we will be able to host the best players and “handball” fans in the heart of Silesia, and we are especially proud that the Polish national team will begin its participation in the tournament in Katowice. As with other events of this kind, sports passions await us, of course, at the Spodek Arena, but we also want to show handball to our residents, especially students of our schools as part of the accompanying actions – says Bogomic Subula, Senior Vice President of the City of Katowice and adds that promotion through sports is an important component of the city’s strategy, which also invests in sports infrastructure. In recent years, Katowice has completed the construction of new sports halls, and currently work has begun on the construction of two complexes on ul. Asnyka is a city stadium with a gym.

Two test events will be prepared for the World Cup. In mid-October 2022, the Polish national team will play the qualifying match for the EHF Euro 2024 in Katowice. At the beginning of January 2023, Spodek will also host a test tournament with the participation of three strong competitors: Russia, Spain and Argentina.

Handball has always been a welcome guest in Katowice and Silesia. Now the city will be the heart of the tournament. The goal of every great event is sport and organizational success. However, we also like to use it to promote sports among children and teens. This thought will guide us on our way to the World Cup. The World Cup will run from January 11 to January 29, 2023. Tickets for matches that will be held in our country will start selling in mid-March. The Poles will start competing in the preliminary round in Katowice. Our representation, if upgraded, will play the main round in Krakow. Płock will be the tournament host for the President’s Cup. Gdansk will host the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

The 2023 World Cup will be hosted by Katowice, Bük, Krakow, Gdansk, Malopolska and Silesia (in Poland), as well as Gothenburg, Malmö, Stockholm, Kristianstad and Jonkoping (in Sweden).
