Alize Cornet’s career at the 2022 Australian Open ended. The strength of American Danielle Collins, who qualified for the second time to the semi-finals of the tournament in Melbourne, showed the strength.

In the fourth game of the first set, Cornet saved three break points, but Collins used the fourth with a mixture of deep strikes and aerial shots. The American played very aggressively and admired meticulously. The matches of the French were often too short, which the opponent mercilessly exploited. Collins distributed her competition around the corners and dictated the terms of the exchange.

After some time, Cornet got rid of this dominance and began to be more active on the field. I changed directions and better tempo, played deep balls. In the ninth inning, the American strayed and gave the pass and rolled the forehand into the net. There was a fierce battle on every point. Collins shortened the exchanges, and the French, who tied from 2:5 to 5:5, also did not try to extend them excessively. In the end, the more aggressive American, who put increasing pressure on her opponent, was the winner. In the twelfth inning, Cornet defended two set pieces, but in the third game she threw a forehand.

Another good comeback came with Collins breaking 2-0 in the second set. The American, after a small crisis in the middle of the First Party, returned to a high level. She regained control of her hitting, admired the efficiency from deep in the field, worked and came back very well. There was a lack of clarity and determination in the Cornet match. She did not work as well on her legs as in the previous rounds. She served worse and worse, and she practically did not exist in the exchanges.

Collins definitely dominated the field. Her front and back hands work perfectly. She was effective in playing at the baseline and did well at the net. Cornet did not have many arguments to make her task more difficult. The American broke 4-0 with a great comeback. In game five, she converted two break points at 15-40 (forehand, ace) and raised to 5-0. She remained focused until the end and this time she did not allow her opponent to return. At 5-1, Collins had already used the first match ball with a deep forehand which caused a foul.

In the 88-minute match, Collins sent five aces. She scored 28 out of 31 on her first pass and 11 out of 15 on the net. You saved two of your three break points and used four of your nine break points. The American sent 28 final hits with 29 non-forced fouls. Cornet was charged with 11 straight wins and 17 fouls. It was the first meeting of these tennis players.

Cornet achieved his 63rd Grand Slam performance and reached the quarter-finals for the first time. On January 22, the French woman turned 32. In her long career, she won six singles titles, one of which was in Katowice (2014). She had one win in Australia (Hobart 2016). It was ranked 11th in the top ranking.

Collins advanced to his second Grand Slam semi-final. She also achieved the top spot in Melbourne in 2019. She scored the quarter-finals at Roland Garros 2020. Last season, the American won her first WTA Tour titles. She won championships in Palermo and San Jose.

On Thursday, Collins plays Iga Švetik or Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the semi-finals.
